Approximately 6.5 million domestic animals arrive at community animal shelters every year. With such a large population of animals, most shelters can afford to take only a fraction. The result is that millions of dogs, cats, and otherwise are euthanized.

The major contribution to the increasing pet population is unplanned litter which can be managed by spaying and neutering programs. Recognizing this, ASPCA provides high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter procedures for pets of locals in underserved communities in New York City, Los Angeles, and Asheville, North Carolina. The organization operates five mobile surgical units and two stationary clinics that offer spaying/neutering at subsidized rates. In 2020, over 47,058 spaying surgeries were performed.
